Xi'an air quality guide. AQI levels, best travel seasons, mask recommendations, and health protection tips.
Xi'an, like many major Chinese cities, experiences periodic air quality issues, particularly during winter months. Understanding AQI levels and knowing how to protect yourself will ensure you enjoy your trip regardless of conditions.
Air quality in Xi'an has improved dramatically over the past decade. The city has invested billions in environmental protection, and "Xi'an Blue" days are becoming more common.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures five major pollutants:
| AQI | Quality | Health Impact | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-50 | Excellent | No impact | Perfect for outdoor activities |
| 51-100 | Good | Very minor impact | Safe for all activities |
| 101-150 | Moderate | Slight concern for sensitive groups | Limit prolonged outdoor exertion |
| 151-200 | Unhealthy | May affect everyone | Reduce outdoor activities |
| 201-300 | Very Unhealthy | Significant health impact | Avoid outdoor activities |
| 300+ | Hazardous | Serious health effects | Stay indoors |
Optimal months: March-May and September-November
Avoid if sensitive: December-February (winter inversion period)
For unhealthy air days, wear a proper mask:
| Mask Type | Effectiveness | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| N95/KN95 | 95% filtration | Recommended |
| N99/KN99 | 99% filtration | Best protection |
| Surgical mask | Limited | Better than nothing |
| Cloth mask | Minimal | Not effective |
KN95 masks are sold at pharmacies (药店), convenience stores, and online. Prices: 5-20 CNY per mask. Bring some from home as backup.

Where to eat and what to try in Xi'an
Xi'an air quality varies by season. Winter (Dec-Feb) often sees AQI 150-300, while spring and autumn range 50-150. Summer is usually the clearest. On high-pollution days, wear an N95 mask and limit prolonged outdoor exposure.
April-May and September-November offer the best air quality with AQI typically below 100. Avoid December through February when coal heating causes severe pollution spikes.
Carry an N95/KN95 mask during winter months when AQI frequently exceeds 150. During spring dust storms, masks are also recommended. In summer and early autumn, masks are generally unnecessary.
The museum is indoors with climate control, so air quality does not impact the experience. However, the outdoor queue area can be unpleasant on high-AQI days.
Xi'an generally has similar or slightly worse air quality than Beijing in winter, but better in summer. Xi'an's geography in a basin traps pollutants more than Beijing's plains location.
