Understanding Chinese Toilets

One of the most common concerns for first-time visitors to China is the bathroom situation. Here's the reality: while Western-style toilets (坐便器, zuò biàn qì) exist, especially in newer buildings and tourist areas, squat toilets (蹲便器, dūn biàn qì) are still very common throughout Xi'an.

Good News

Western-style toilets are increasingly common in Xi'an, particularly in shopping malls, international hotels, newer restaurants, and tourist-friendly areas. You'll rarely need to walk more than 10-15 minutes to find one.

Public Toilets in Xi'an

Xi'an has invested significantly in public toilet infrastructure, particularly along tourist routes. The city aims for "everywhere you walk in 500 meters, there's a public toilet."

Public Toilet Reality

Most public toilets in Xi'an are squat toilets. However, the city has been rapidly upgrading facilities, and many newer public toilets now include at least one Western-style cubicle. Look for the orange "WC" signs.

How to Use a Squat Toilet

If you do encounter a squat toilet, here's how to use it properly:

1 Face the correct direction

The hole is oriented so you face toward the wall, not away from it. The foot platforms are on either side of the hole.

2 Position your feet

Place both feet on the foot platforms, one on each side of the hole. Your heels should be slightly raised.

3 Squat down

Lower yourself until you're in a deep squat position. Your thighs should be at least parallel to the ground, ideally pressed against your calves.

4 Balance yourself

You may need to touch the wall for balance or use the grab bars often found on the wall in front.

5 Use paper wisely

Drop toilet paper in the bowl (most systems can handle it) or use the waste basket if provided. Some older systems can't handle paper.

Pro Tip

Practice squatting at home before your trip. Western visitors often find it takes practice to maintain balance and comfort in this position. Consider carrying personal wet wipes (湿巾, shī jīn) for extra cleanliness.
