Why You Need Alipay in Xi'an

Alipay (支付宝, Zhīfùbǎo) is the backbone of daily life in China. From buying metro tickets to ordering food delivery, almost everything requires mobile payment. The good news: foreign credit cards now work with Alipay, making it accessible for international visitors.

Good News

Alipay now supports foreign credit cards from Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB. You can link your international card and pay like a local!

How to Set Up Alipay with Foreign Card

1 Download Alipay

Download Alipay from your app store before arriving in China (Google Play doesn't work in China, so download from alipay.com or use App Store/Android store before departure).

2 Switch to English Interface

Open Alipay, tap your profile icon, go to Settings (设置), select Language, and choose English. The interface will switch to English mode.

3 Verify Phone Number

Enter your international phone number. You'll receive an SMS verification code. Note: This works with most international numbers, but a Chinese SIM is recommended for best experience.

4 Add Credit Card

Go to "My Cards" or "Bank Cards" section. Tap "Add Card" and enter your foreign credit card details. Accept the terms and complete verification.

5 Set Payment Password

Create a 6-digit payment password. You'll use this for every transaction, so make sure it's something you can remember quickly.

Important

Your first transaction may require identity verification (face scan or passport photo). This is mandatory for foreign cards and usually takes 24-48 hours to process.

How to Pay with Alipay

QR Code Payment (Most Common)

When paying at a store:

  1. Open Alipay and tap "Pay" (付款)
  2. A QR code will appear on your screen
  3. The merchant scans your code with their handheld device
  4. Enter your payment password
  5. Transaction complete - you'll see a green checkmark

Scan Merchant QR Code

For smaller vendors:

  1. Tap "Scan" (扫一扫) in Alipay
  2. Scan the merchant's QR code
  3. Verify the amount shown
  4. Confirm payment with your password
