Why Visit

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) is one of Xi'an's most iconic landmarks, standing 64 meters tall with seven floors. Built in 652 AD during the Tang Dynasty, it was designed by architect Youn Vayas as a memorial to honor the Buddhist scriptures brought back from India by the famous monk Xuanzang after his 17-year pilgrimage. The pagoda's elegant octagonal shape and brick construction have made it a symbol of ancient Chinese architectural achievement. Today, the surrounding area is a beautiful public park with fountains, gardens, and a spectacular musical fountain show.

Highlights

  • The Pagoda - Climb 7 floors for panoramic views of Xi'an
  • Xuanzang Statue - Massive bronze statue of the legendary monk
  • Da Ci'en Temple - Adjacent Buddhist temple from the Tang Dynasty
  • Musical Fountain - Asia's largest evening fountain show (free)
  • Night Views - Beautiful illuminated pagoda after dark

Visitor Tips

  • Visit the musical fountain show in the evening (best at 20:30)
  • The pagoda climb is steep - wear comfortable shoes
  • Combine with nearby Small Wild Goose Pagoda for a full pagoda day
  • The area is very popular with locals in the evening - great atmosphere
  • Photography: best shots from the north side of the square
